Access to training courses

Training is provided via the following modes:

Central training: open to all governors and run from a central venue.

School-based training: customised training for the whole governing body on a topic of your own choice, usually held in your school.

Cluster group training: a cost-cutting alternative to single governing body training, usually for two or three governing bodies, held locally in one of the participating schools.

Cost

The training programme can be accessed either by an annual subscription or on a pay-as-you-go basis. We believe that the cost of subscription provides excellent value for money as it gives your governing body unlimited access to all centrally run courses plus one bespoke session for your whole governing body on a topic of your choice and usually held at your school. For further details please see the service level agreement. For non-subscribing schools the cost of training is £110 per person per course. As part of Southwark Local Authority’s commitment to your development as a school governor, the induction programme for new governors is being offered free of charge to all LA maintained schools. Academies/free schools are charged a minimal fee for induction sessions.

Training venues

The majority of training courses are held in the Council’s offices at 160 Tooley Street, SE1 2TZ (please see the map below). On occasion, we may need to use other venues. The Tooley Street offices were modernised not too long ago and training rooms are comfortable and accessible to people with a disability who use a wheelchair. Should you have any other requirements please contact us prior to attending.

You can book a place on a course by email, telephone or post. You can either use a booking form (docx, 18kb)or simply state the courses you wish to attend in your email or letter.Once you have requested a course, an acknowledgement will be emailed to you. Joining instructions are usually emailed about a week prior to the course. Although we aim to communicate via e-mail only, if you do not have access to email, we will send you joining instructions by post. Should you not hear from us after booking a course, please get in touch to confirm your place prior to attending.

Cancellations

We make every effort to ensure courses run as planned, but it is vital that we have your contact details to inform you about any changes. If we have to cancel/postpone the course we will notify you as soon as possible. If a course does not attract a sufficient number of governors a week prior to its scheduled date, it may be cancelled. You can help us by booking well in advance.

If you find yourself unable to attend a course you have booked, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer your place to another governor on the waiting list or amend course arrangements accordingly.

If you fail to attend a booked course without giving 3 working days prior notice of cancellation, we may charge your school £25 (subscribing schools) to help us cover the costs incurred on your behalf with regard to course administration, room  hire and catering. Non-subscribing schools will be charged the full cost of the session.
