The DfE have published a draft revised statutory framework and profile handbook for the Early Years Foundation Stage. These documents will be used by the 25 schools who are taking part in the pilot due to start in September 2018.

In a speech on the 22nd June 2018, Nadhim Zahawi MP announced that the changes were aimed at reducing teachers’ workload to free up more time to support children’s early skills and produce engaging lessons.

MrZahawi went on to say that the pilot would help to address the problem of children arriving at school struggling with language and social skills, helping to close the so-called ‘word gap’ – the gap between disadvantaged children’s communication and that of their peers when they start school.

Follwoing the pilot a consultation will be launched to enable professionals from the sector to share their views on the proposed changes.

The draft versions of the framework and profile handbook can be accessed at the Foundation years website.

Please be aware that these draft documents are only for use in pilot schools. If you would like any further guidance please contact one o the Early Years Team who will be happy to help.
