Aims

Early years providers are required, by law, to ensure that they meet the needs of all children as follows;

The EYFS seeks to provide equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice, ensuring that every child is included and supported.

Early years inspection handbook for Ofsted registered provision Ofsted inspectors will look at how well Early Years settings are meeting the needs of all children, with a new  focus on ‘Cultural Capital’.

Cultural capital is the essential knowledge that children need to prepare them for their future success. It is about giving children the best possible start to their early education. As part of making a judgement about the quality of education, inspectors will consider how well leaders use the curriculum to enhance the experience and opportunities available to children, particularly the most disadvantaged.’

The Equality Act (2010) recognises the need for Early Years practitioners to promote equality of opportunity and make reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of children. Disability, race and religion or belief are all protected characteristics within this Act.

Additionally, under the SEND Code of Practice 0-25 years (2015) and the Children and Families Act (2014) providers have a duty to ensure that they are prepared in advance to include children into their setting with SEND.

Summary

This training day will look at how practitioners can best meet the needs of children in their care whilst ensuring accessibility and equality of opportunity for all and how the legal requirements can be implemented in daily practice.
